Why do I get disconnected when I check my email in Outlook Express?

Why do I keep getting the same emails over and over again?

Why do I continually get popup advertisements?

What is spyware and adware?

Q: Why do I get disconnected when I check my email in Outlook Express?
A: Outlook Express is possibly set to "Hang up when finished sending or receiving."  Click on Tools in the menu at the top of Outlook Express.  Click on Options which will open a new window.  Choose the tab at the top labeled Connection.  Place a check mark to the left of "Ask before switching dial-up connections" if one is not already there.  Remove the check mark from "Hang up after sending and receiving" if one is there.  For further assistance contact West Plains Computer Source.

Q: Why do I keep getting the same email over and over again.
A: This problem occurs because your account is stuck on downloading an email and it never finishes downloading all of the email messages, this can happen if there is an incomplete spam message or if there is a message too large to download over a dialup connection.  Your email program (i.e. Outlook Express) should show an error, which normally says something about your account has timed out.  Our server does not remove any of your emails until it has completely downloaded all of the messages in your account, and so the next time you check your email it starts back at the first message again.  Contact us so we can determine which email is causing the problem and remove it from your account.

You can also try increasing the program's "Server Timeouts" setting.  In Outlook Express click on Tools in the taskbar at the top of the window.  Click on accounts.  Switch to the tab at the top that says Mail.  Highlight your account and click on Properties button to the right.  A new window will open.  Choose the tab labeled Advanced.  Under the section labeled "Server Timeouts", slide the bar from the left (Short / 1 minute) to the right (Long / 5 minutes).  Click on OK, which will bring you back to the previous window.  Click close.  Close Outlook Express.  Now open Outlook Express and try to download your messages again.

Q: Why do I continually get popup advertisements?
A: You most likely are infected with adware and spyware.  Spyware and adware are different than viruses.  You will need to clean your computer.  The programs that we recommend can be downloaded here.

Q: What is spyware and adware?
A:

Spyware:  Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Adware:  Advertising that is integrated into software. Adware is often combined with a host application that is provided at no charge as long as the user agrees to accept the adware.
